Second question: I can't seem to make my photos appear where I put the cursor when I add them. They always end up in a row at the bottom of the reply.
Two Questions

Hmmm that's curious. I'm not sure what the answer is to that.
The second problem is easier for me. If you go to the upper right portion on the screen and click "help" then under the heading "posting" you'll find this info on attachments.
Managing Attachments
Regardless of which uploader you use, once the files are uploaded you will see them on your screen. By default, all attachments are added to the bottom of your message, however, you can add any attachment to a particular section of your post by pressing the "Add to Post" link.
If you wish to remove an attachment and have it not appear in your post, simply press the "Delete" link.
When I am previewing my own posts I might type a line about the photo I am going to show and then click the "add to post", then another little blurb and then "add to post" for the next pic and so on.
I hope that helps, but if you have more problems just let me know!

As to the "new content", I was going to say what Kimberly did. I'm not sure why you still see read topics grayed out. The ones I've just read disappear when I click 'new content' again. They only reappear when someone adds a reply to them. Are you back-spacing maybe? Instead of refreshing and clicking 'new content' again? I wonder ... ??

On the other issue, sometimes I've noticed a "new content" post being greyed out after I've read it and then shortly after it dissappears from the new content area. I don't know why yours is leaving immediately, but is it a problem? I mean does it show as new content again once there is a new post for you to read?

Yes on the other issue. I just don't understand why the one thread I'm talking about always disappears from the "View New Content" when all the other posts that day stay there even after I've read their new replies. The first thing I do when I come on the forum is to click the View New Content and read that day's replies. If a thread I've read disappears, I'm assuming no one else that does the same thing can see it either unless they searched the forum as Kimberly mentioned. It just seems very odd that it doesn't happen with any other threads including those I have started myself (at least not that I know of).

No, this is setting is specific to each person. What you see is totally different from what I see, what Kathy sees, what Marj sees, etc. The settings on this forum work with the cookies on our individual computers to let us know what we each have viewed and not viewed.
Okay, the second part makes sense, but why do I see the rest of them I have read and not that one particular thread?

I give up! Maybe Ryan or Carolina will have your answer.

Sorry for the late response to your first question. In short, I'm not exactly sure.
However, I have been playing around with the View New Content list for a little while now. Here is what I have experienced:
1. When I click on the orange square before the Thread title to read the unread posts, after I read them, the thread does disappear from my View New Content list.
2. I tried only reading *some* (not all) of the unread posts to see if that made a difference or not. It didn't. The thread still disappeared from the View New Content list.
3. If you go to the last page of your View New Content list, you might see some threads that have the greyed out folder to the left of the thread title. I tried clicking on one of those threads. After I read that thread, it disappeared from my View New Content list.
So, I am trying to figure out why some threads appear with the greyed out folder in the View New Content list at all. I am guessing right now that those might be the threads that I have never ever read? I did accidentally once "mark all threads read", yet I still have these greyed out threads in my VNC list.
It seems though that once a thread has been read for new content, the thread title disappears from the View New Content list. So, once you have read Huggie's Tale, it should disappear from your VNC list.
Do you see anything "special" in particular about the greyed out threads in your VNC list, Barbara? Are they ones you have read? Have not read?
Looking for more clues.....

Maybe your experience is different from mine because of different operating systems or browsers or whatever. Because it looks like some people experience the thread disappearing while others like me still see the thread only the orange box becomes gray after reading the last post. But it still doesn't explain why one thread would disappear and the rest of them just get a gray box next to them after reading.
The grayed out boxes in the VNC list are all threads I have read. Also, when I go to the last page of VNC threads and read one of those with gray boxes, they don't disappear either. They must disappear after a certain date because the oldest ones start on Sept. 8th. Seems like if they go back that far, then all the newer ones should still show up on VNC. Right?
Right, that would make sense. Hmmmm.
It is definitely inconsistent that some threads would disappear and some would just get a gray box. I have asked the admins to look into this for you.
